Welcome back to one of our favorite blog series In the Greenlight, where you can get an inside glimpse into the Koupon team! We’ve never been much to brag, but we think our team is pretty incredible and they deserve their time in the spotlight. This week we sat down with Allison Berti, our Manager of Data and Analytics.
Meet Allison! This outdoor adventurer and occasional podcaster has led major transformation regarding our data analytics capabilities as a company. We're so excited to help you get to know this amazing Kouponeer!
Manager of Data and Analytics is an important role at Koupon, can you give us a glimpse of what you do on a day-to-day basis?
My day-to-day can vary considerably, but some things the team may do on any given day are create new dashboards for clients and internal teams, create and manage data workflows that feed dashboards and other reporting, pull together ad hoc reports to provide unique c-store industry insights to clients, and attend meetings with various Koupon teams to discuss insights or gather requirements for different data needs. In addition to the tactical work, we also make sure we’re always forward thinking and strategic when planning the kinds of insights we provide and the data products we create so that we continue to be data leaders in the industry. The days can be pretty busy, but I have an awesome team I get to work with every day and they’re invaluable to making the data world go round at Koupon!
As a Geology major in undergrad, data & analytics might not seem like the normal career path to most. What drew you to this field?
I enjoyed studying geology in school but when it came time to think about careers, I felt a little limited with the industries I could pursue with that degree. I worked with data and built an analytical skillset in undergrad, but those skills were used to analyze rocks, to put it simply. I liked the idea of entering a growing field that would allow me to leverage some of what I learned in undergrad with the ability to pursue any industry I desired, and analytics gave me just that. I’m still working with data, just a different kind now.
How have you seen the use of analytics grow during your time at Koupon?
The data transformation Koupon has experienced in the time I’ve been here has been incredible. Not only has our purchase dataset grown tremendously, our capabilities and the insights we can provide to our clients have advanced as well. Plus, the data team isn’t the only team that uses analytics daily--data driven decisions are being made across every team. Koupon has truly become a data company.
Will you share some of the most valuable types of data insights your team is able to provide our clients?
I think some of the most valuable insights we’re able to provide to our clients are consumer-level insights. Being able to see how individual consumers are behaving, especially how that behavior may change over time or after a promotional period, is an extremely powerful insight. Both brands and retailers can better understand their consumers with these types of analyses – whether that’s a brand targeting a competitor’s shoppers with high value offers, or a retailer measuring the effect of a promotional program. There’s a lot of value to gain all around.
You recently guest starred on Koupon's podcast, How Convenient, how was your first podcasting experience?
I was a little nervous going into the episode, but it was really fun! Brad and Greg are pretty much professional podcasters at this point, so they helped me prepare for it. Like I said during the episode, what kind of millennial would I be if I didn’t try to host a podcast? I’m really grateful for the opportunity and hopefully will come back for another episode one day!
Besides working face-to-face with the Koupon team, what are you most looking forward to about returning to the office?
Not only am I looking forward to working face-to-face with the Koupon team again, I’m also excited to meet some of the Koupon team. We’ve been growing throughout the last year (while working from home) so there are new Kouponeers I haven’t met in person yet!
You studied Geology at the University of Texas. What is one outdoor adventure you've had that totally rocked?
One of the required geology courses at UT is a 6-week field camp the summer before senior year, where students drive and camp across the US while studying the geology in different parts of the country. While it was very challenging at times, I had the incredible opportunity to hike around and explore beautiful parts of the country (my favorite being The Grand Tetons) with some of my closest friends. It was an experience I’ll never forget!
Check back next month for another glimpse into the Koupon team!
