U.S. Convenience Store Count Stands at 153,237 Stores

  • There are 153,237 convenience stores operating in the United States, a 1.1% decline from last year’s record of 154,958 stores, according to the 2019 NACS/Nielsen Convenience Industry Store Count. The count is based on stores as of December 31, 2018.
  • Looking at the last five years (2013-2018), the top three states—Texas (+554), California (+742) and Florida (+66)—have increased their store count by a combined 1,362 stores, with the growth mostly coming from larger convenience store chains with 500 or more stores.
  • Insight: Despite the small drop in convenience store locations in 2018, grocery locations declined twice as much and key states saw strong increases in convenience store locations.

Amazon Struggles to Make Online Grocery Shopping Stick

  • The number of Amazon Prime members who shop for groceries at least once a month declined in 2018 compared with 2017, according to the results of an annual consumer survey released Wednesday by UBS analysts. 
  • A separate study by research firm Brick Meets Click found that households using grocery delivery and pickup services from physical retailers spend about $200 per month and place orders more frequently than Amazon grocery shoppers, who spend $74 a month.
  • Insight: Brick and mortar retailers have an advantage in convenience over Amazon with more locations closer to customers.

SoftBank Gives Nuro’s Robo-Delivery Tech A Hefty $940 Million Boost

  • SoftBank is pouring $940 million into Nuro, a Silicon Valley startup developing toaster-shaped robotic delivery vehicles, one of the single-biggest funding rounds to date in the race to commercialize autonomous technology.
  • The Mountain View, California, company, founded by two former members of the Google Self-Driving Car Project, said the SoftBank funds will let it expand an automated delivery service it began last year into new areas, add partners, grow its fleet of unmanned vehicles, accelerate development of its technology and “significantly” expand its team.
